Thames Hospice is inviting supporters to sign up and be part of their biggest and best Sunflower Walk yet on Sunday 8 September 2024, starting and finishing in the beautiful Hospice grounds.
This year marks a special milestone as the Hospice celebrates a decade of walking together, sharing memories, and making a difference in the local community. Last year’s Sunflower Walk was record-breaking with over 750 Thames Hospice supporters participating and this year, the Hospice is calling on the local community to help them break records again!
Walkers can choose from three scenic routes, including a picturesque 2.5k stroll around Bray Lake, a 10k power walk venturing out to Dorney Lake or a more challenging half marathon route which journeys from the Hospice along the Thames Path to Windsor and back. Afterwards, walkers will have the opportunity to enjoy entertainment and refreshments in the Hospice Gardens.
Thames Hospice supporter, Jan Barber (AKA ‘Super Gran Jan’) is walking this year in memory of her beloved husband Phil, who received care from the Hospice. Jan says: “The Care Team were amazing, they would laugh with Phil and he adored them. Having seen the loving care my husband received, that was my first love of the Hospice."
Jan is keen to encourage others to lace up their walking shoes and take part in the Sunflower Walk: “The Sunflower Walk has put a new spark in my life and I am determined to complete it. I’m looking forward to feeling the fun atmosphere and the joy of the day. I want to do something to support the Hospice because it’s such a caring and beautiful place.
“I am aiming to raise £1,000 and I will do my absolute best to reach my target. To know I have contributed to the Hospice means so much to me. I will never ever give up doing what I can to help."
Jan adds, “To anyone thinking of signing up to the Sunflower Walk I would say, do it, you will feel fantastic afterwards knowing you’ve helped keep the Hospice running and that’s the most important thing”.
Nine colleagues from Thames Hospice’s Care at Home Team are also taking part in this year’s Sunflower Walk and they will even be dressing up in sunflower costumes! Team Thames Hospice said: “We see first-hand the people who need our services when we go out into the community. We are aiming to raise £1,000 and create some great community spirit by dressing up as sunflowers! We want to encourage everyone to take part for an excellent cause and support Thames Hospice.”
Participants will also be able to purchase a beautiful metal sunflower in memory of their loved one which will be displayed in the Hospice gardens during the day of the Sunflower Walk and for a month following the event. Afterwards, supporters can take their metal sunflower home as a keepsake.
Walk alongside Jan, Team Thames Hospice and hundreds of other incredible supporters and sign up to the Thames Hospice Sunflower Walk today.
