Thames Hospice welcomed a very special visit today as the Irish Guards and their majestic Irish Wolfhound mascot, Seamus, reunited with one of their own.

John Toner, known to friends and family as Sean, currently being cared for by the Hospice, served in the Irish Guards between 1970 and 1982 and was given a heartwarming visit by members of the Regiment, sharing cherished memories and moments of camaraderie.

The visit was arranged to honour Sean’s service and provide a meaningful experience for him and his family. The distinguished regiment and their much-loved four-legged companion, Seamus, were warmly welcomed, making for an emotional and unforgettable morning.

Company Sergeant Major Molloy of the Irish Guards, said:

“Today, we honoured a true Guardsman, Sean, whose dedication and service with the Irish Guards exemplify the very best of our Regimental spirit. His commitment, sacrifice and loyalty continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps. Once a Mick, always a Mick.”

Reflecting on the visit, Sean from Slough said:
"Being part of the Irish Guards was a huge part of my life, and to see the regiment again was truly special. It brought back so many fond memories, and having Seamus here made it even more wonderful. I’m incredibly grateful for this visit."

Dr Denise Forth, who helped arrange the visit added: “It was such an honour to play a part in organising this special visit for our patient and his family. Thames Hospice is committed to providing compassionate care, ensuring patients and their families can create meaningful moments together. This visit is a reminder of the lifelong bonds of service and the kindness of the wider community.”
