My Journey with Thames Hospice with Layla Pipe

As a senior community fundraiser at the Hospice, I often meet people who want to raise money because they've lost a loved one here. They're eager to give back by organising events, whilst also some find it a great comfort. I’m here to support them - I provide fundraising advice and supplies like banners and buckets, and listen to their stories and feedback, to help improve the Hospice.

One of my greatest passions lies in working with schools. Over the past 18 months, along with my colleague Hannah, I've had the privilege of speaking to over 10,000 children in our local community about hospice care. Together, we've raised more than £100,000 for Thames Hospice, which I'm incredibly proud of. My aim is to empower children to see hospice care as a positive and integral part of life, showing them how their contributions, along with joy, compassion and community spirit, can make a difference.

My journey into hospice care began when a dear friend of mine received support during a challenging time. This experience sparked important conversations with my children about grief and the value in helping others. I wanted them to know that the Hospice is a happy place…where sad things do happen, but ultimately I wanted to them to know that when you walk through the doors, it's a community and you become part of it.

Recently, I attended a community event celebrating International Women's Day, where I connected with remarkable individuals advocating for various causes. Seeing a diverse group come together to uplift one another and foster a sense of belonging was inspiring. I explained to my daughter Penny, "International Women's Day is a time to learn more about the people around us, their passions, and how to support those in need."

I am passionate about empowering my children and others to learn more about why fundraising and supporting local charities is important. And that everyone has a responsibility to support vital services within our community.

The strength of the Thames Hospice community is something I witness every day, and it makes me incredibly proud. Every contribution, every act of support, strengthens our ability to provide the highest level of care to patients and their families. It's a powerful reminder that through shared support, we can achieve extraordinary things.
