Embracing Ramadan: Reflection, community, and celebration

The holy month of Ramadan is something every practicing Muslim eagerly awaits each year. Among its many blessings, the most significant for Muslims is the revelation of the Holy Quran, a divine guidance for humanity, which was first revealed by the Angel Gabriel to the noble Prophet Muhammad (SAWS). For us, Ramadan is a time to strengthen our connection with the Divine, deepen our understanding of the Quran, increase our worship, and give more in charity.

We observe fasting during the daylight hours, which teaches us patience, discipline, and self-restraint while helping us avoid things that are harmful to the body, mind, and soul. As a practicing Muslim, I look forward to this time—not only because it strengthens my faith but also because it allows me to spend more time with loved ones. Sharing suhoor (pre-dawn meal) and iftar (breaking of the fast) with family every day is something I cherish, as it can be difficult to coordinate in our usual busy routines.

This year, my wife and I will be spending Ramadan away from our families, but we are excited to travel to see them towards the end of the month in time for Eid, the festival marking the conclusion of Ramadan. Eid is a day filled with festivities, beginning with an early morning prayer, followed by a grand feast and culminating in the exchange of gifts. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of receiving Eid goodies—gifts, chocolates, and even cash—from my elders as a reward for fasting throughout the month!

One of the challenges many Muslims face while working professionally in the UK is finding space for daily prayers. I am grateful that at Thames Hospice, we have a multi-faith and reflection room, which provides a peaceful and quiet place for worship. Having this dedicated space brings me great comfort and reassurance, allowing me to practice my faith without concern.

Wishing a blessed Ramadan to all my colleagues at the Hospice, who work with passion and dedication to serve our community. Our faith teaches us kindness, generosity, and service to others, and in that spirit, I feel truly blessed to be part of an organisation dedicated to such a noble cause.

Ramadan Mubarak.
