This May is Make a Will Month at Thames Hospice and we have lots of ways to help you write your Will.
Get your Will written or updated with a local solicitor for a donation to Thames Hospice, or write your Will online for free. Come to our solicitor drop in sessions at the Café by the Lake or at the Reading Superstore and get free advice from a local solicitor.
Write or update a simple Will with a local solicitor for a donation to Thames Hospice. Our partner solicitors generously give their time for free to host Will Month appointments with your donation coming directly to our charity.

How to book:
- Simply get in touch directly with a solicitor of your choice from the list above and make an appointment. Anyone can use this offer including patients, families, supporters, volunteers, staff and the general public.
- The suggested donation for a single simple Will is £200 and a simple Mirror Will is £300. The solicitor will advise you on how much the firm would normally charge for preparing the Will. You'll be given a Thames Hospice donation form to complete and will be asked to make a donation that reflects the time and effort of the solicitors work.
- There is no obligation to include a gift to Thames Hospice in your Will. The solicitors will be able to advise you about the tax effectiveness of Gifts in Wills and after you’ve remembered those closest to you, we hope you may consider us.
- At the appointment, explain what you'd like by telling the solicitor the assets you have and who you'd like to benefit in the event of your death. The solicitor will tell you if it can be done as a standard Will. If you require specialist advice, the solicitor will tell you what can be included under the Make a Will Month scheme and give you a separate price for the remaining work. All solicitors reserve the right to charge you a fee if your Will is not simple.

FAQ's
What information is needed to include a gift in my Will?
To include Thames Hospice in your Will please use our charity name, address and registered charity number, which will ensure your gift reaches us in the future.

What about inheritance tax?
All gifts to charity are exempt from inheritance tax. If you leave 10% or more of your estate to charities, it will reduce the amount of rate of inheritance tax (36% instead of 40%) on the rest of your estate. Please speak to your solicitor for legal advice.
Can I write my own Will?
Yes, however the danger is that you may overlook something that will either create confusion or affect the impact of inheritance tax. For example, you could express a wish that is not legally enforceable.
That is why we have partnered with Octopus Legacy, where a Will adviser will review your Will for free and highlight anything that isn’t clear.
What if I want to change my Will at a later date?
That is perfectly fine. Solicitors normally advise you to review your Will every few years to make sure that it doesn’t become out of date and that it reflects your changing circumstances. Ensure your Will is up to date by either writing a new one or amending and updating your existing one using a codicil. Get in touch for more information.
Should I tell you that I've left a gift in my Will?
There is absolutely no obligation to tell us that you have left Thames Hospice a gift in your Will and any pledge you make is not legally binding. However, if you would like to let us know that you have remembered us in your Will, we’d love to hear from you so that we can thank you. Please let us know by contacting our team.
