Thames Hospice proudly marked the 80th anniversary of VE Day on Thursday 8 May with a poignant tribute at the Hospice, joined by Guardsmen from the Welsh Guards regiment.

The commemorative event began at 11:00am with the arrival of the Welsh Guards, who were warmly welcomed by Hospice colleagues, volunteers, patients, and members of the local community. At 12:00 noon, a military bugler performed The Last Post, followed by a national two-minute silence and Reveille, observed by those gathered at the Hospice in the Café and across its retail shops.

Many wore red, white, and blue to mark the historic occasion and honour those who served.

The event formed part of nationwide efforts to reflect on the end of World War II in Europe and remember the bravery and sacrifice of the armed forces and civilian communities who contributed to the war effort.

As part of the day’s commemorations, Thames Hospice also proudly announced that it has been awarded the Bronze Award under the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme - a national recognition of the Hospice’s commitment to supporting serving personnel, reservists, veterans, and military families.

Dr Rachael de Caux, Thames Hospice Chief Executive, said:

“It was a great honour to welcome the Welsh Guards and to stand together in a moment of national reflection. VE Day reminds us of the courage and sacrifice of so many, and we are proud to play our part in remembering them.

“We are also delighted to have received the Bronze Award from the Armed Forces Covenant. It reflects our ongoing dedication to supporting the armed forces community within our Hospice and beyond.”

Thames Hospice pledges to ensure that veterans and those connected to the military are treated with fairness, respect, and inclusion.
