Today, Thames Hospice is proud to officially unveil Trunks across the Thames, its spectacular free public art trail featuring beautiful elephants, world-class artists and a very special story narrated by much-loved TV presenter, Alex Jones.

This summer, something truly extraordinary is arriving in Slough and Windsor.
From 13 July to 13 September 2026, a vibrant herd of beautifully designed elephant sculptures will take over streets, parks and public spaces across the region as part of Trunks across the Thames, the first-ever public art trail from Thames Hospice.

The free, family-friendly trail will feature 30 large elephant sculptures brought to life by talented artists from across the UK, alongside more than 60 smaller elephants created by local schools and community groups. Together, they will transform familiar places into an unforgettable outdoor gallery, encouraging residents and visitors alike to explore, discover and connect.

At the heart of the trail is ‘The Tale of Hope’, a specially created story that celebrates connection, compassion and community. Bringing the story to life is broadcaster and television presenter Alex Jones, who has generously lent her voice to narrate the tale.

Dr Rachael de Caux, Chief Executive Officer at Thames Hospice, said: "Trunks across the Thames is so much more than an art trail. It is an opportunity to bring our communities together, celebrate creativity, start important conversations and shine a light on the care and support Thames Hospice provides every day.

"We are incredibly grateful to everyone who is helping to make this possible, from our sponsors and artists to the schools, community groups and supporters who have embraced the project. Having Alex Jones narrate The Tale of Hope is incredibly special and helps us share the heart behind the trail with even more people."

The trail has been made possible thanks to the support of local businesses and organisations, led by headline sponsors Amazon and Iron Mountain Data Centers, alongside a growing family of sponsors, including our Learning Partner Maidenhead Golf Club, who have helped bring the herd to life. Our gratitude also to Slough Borough Council and Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.

Visitors will discover elephants designed by an exceptional collection of artists, each sculpture telling its own unique story through creativity, colour and imagination. Among the highlights is a very special elephant created by internationally renowned artist and author Charlie Mackesy, whose artwork and storytelling have touched millions around the world.

The exclusive first reveal of Charlie Mackesy's elephant will take place at the Royal Windsor Flower Show on Saturday 6 June, giving visitors the chance to be among the first to see this remarkable sculpture before it joins the herd later this summer.

Over the coming weeks, more elephants, artists and trail experiences will be revealed as excitement builds towards launch day on 13 July.

Trunks across the Thames has been created in partnership with leading public art trail producers Wild in Art, whose award-winning trails have attracted millions of visitors and raised significant funds for charitable causes across the UK.

As the countdown begins, organisers are encouraging residents to keep their eyes peeled for elephant sightings, artist reveals and exciting trail announcements.
