Grey skies didn't cloud the mood as a sea of sunflowers descended on Virginia Water on Saturday (21 May) for our most successful Sunflower Walk to date.
The current fundraising total stands at more than 35,000, generated from the registration fees and sponsorship of the more than 400 participants a record number. Leading plumbing services company, John Guest, sponsored the event for the third year running and also entered 27 staff members, making up two fantastic teams - The Bluebells and The Daisies.
Alison Evans, Head of Community, Events & Corporate Fundraising, said: "This was a chance for our supporters to walk in memory of a loved one and celebrate their lives around the beautiful Virginia Water. The weather was kind to us and there was a great atmosphere amongst the groups of families, friends and corporate supporters who have raised an unbelievable total. This has been the best year yet and we would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported us to make the day so special ensuring we can continue the vital work we do in your community."
The Sunflower Walk is an annual family friendly event and participants selected the distance of their choice from 13k, 6.5k and 4k. Walkers on the shortest route were joined by cartoon characters Mickey and Minnie and were welcomed over the finish line by Frozen's Elsa before enjoying a delicious cupcake generously donated by Anne Marie Patisserie, Ascot. All walkers received a goodie bag and certificate for taking part and had the opportunity to remember a loved one by leaving a message on our Memory Tree - which will be displayed at the Hospice until July.
Walkers can continue to raise sponsorship for The Sunflower Walk until Thursday 30 June 2016 and the participant who raises the most money will win a special edition Star Wars PS4 kindly donated to Thames Hospice by a supporter.
