Marta Gil, one of the Hospice’s Senior Staff Nurse is taking on a personal challenge with a profound purpose: to raise vital funds by participating in the charity’s upcoming Open Water Swim at Bray Lake next month.
Witnessing firsthand the "incredible strength and resilience" of patients and their families during their final journey, Marta is motivated by their courage and the love that surrounds them, she said "As a nurse in Thames Hospice, I have the privilege of supporting and caring for patients during their final journey," Marta explains, "I strive to make that experience not just bearable, but also filled with dignity and comfort."
For Marta, the swim is more than a personal feat; it's a symbolic representation of the journey faced by patients. "Swimming represents the journey that our patients face, requiring courage, perseverance, and support to navigate unfamiliar waters," she shares.
Every stroke Marta takes will be driven by the desire to enhance the care provided at Thames Hospice, ensuring the charity’s services remain free of charge to those in the community who need them most. "Every donation will go directly towards enhancing the care we provide at the Hospice," Marta emphasises. "By supporting my swim, you become part of our compassionate community that ensures no one faces the need of their life journey alone."
Thames Hospice's Open Water Swim challenge, which takes place on the 22 June, offers a range of distances, welcoming swimmers of all abilities. Whether you're a seasoned open water pro or have only ever swum in a pool, this is an opportunity to enjoy tranquil surroundings, experience the health and wellbeing benefits of open water swimming, and support a vital local charity. Participants can take on the challenge individually or as part of a team.
