Thames Hospice supporters took the plunge and dived head first into the charity’s new Open Water Swim Challenge last Sunday (2 July 2023) to raise vital funds for the Hospice.

The event offered a range of distances for all abilities so swimmers could choose from 500m to 10km. The day was a huge success with 150 supporters braving Bray Lake and cheered on by many spectators.

Marion, who swam in memory of her neighbour Diane, said: “My neighbour, Diane, was cared for by Thames Hospice last year and I came and visited her. I think a facility like this is just absolutely amazing. Everyone that works here is an angel and it’s great to have, so I think supporting it is absolutely fantastic.”

After gliding through to the finishing line, swimmers collected their medals and a well-deserved hot drink from the charity’s Café by the Lake.

To date, the Open Water Swim event has raised in excess of £37,000 for Thames Hospice which could fund the cost of one nurse for 10 months of the year.

Thames Hospice’s Head of Community and Events, Claire Redrup, says: “I loved the opportunity of organising and being part of our first ever Open Water Swim Challenge. It was wonderful on the day to take in the stunning surroundings at Bray Lake knowing that this incredible event has raised vital income for the Hospice.

“My colleagues and volunteers absolutely smashed it, I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face all day and even managed a 1km swim myself!

“It was also very moving to hear stories of why our supporters chose to participate, many swimming in memory of a loved one. We are so grateful for the support of our community.”

A massive thank you to all our staff, volunteers and suppliers who ensured this event ran safely and smoothly. A special mention to Bray Lake Watersports who helped deliver an enjoyable and safe event on the day, Mailsports Swimwear for donating the vibrant coloured swimming caps and the Shanly Foundation for their sponsorship.
