Ying’s story
“Getting to chat with people over a coffee and be part of their day is something I genuinely enjoy.”
“Getting to chat with people over a coffee and be part of their day is something I genuinely enjoy.”
After graduating from university, Ying found herself with a rare gift: time. Taking a year out before starting her new job, she knew she wanted to use that time in a meaningful way. That’s when she decided to volunteer for Thames Hospice — a cause close to her heart.
Ying began her journey in late September, helping out at the Reading Superstore on the shop floor in the fashion and homeware section. It was a rewarding role, but before long she found herself drawn to a different area of the store — the Café.
Now volunteering one and a half days a week, Ying has become a familiar face behind the counter. “I love it here,” she says. “The customers are so friendly, and the other volunteers and staff are brilliant — so warm and welcoming.”
As a true coffee enthusiast, working in the Café feels like a perfect fit. “It’s a real thing for me,” she smiles. “Getting to chat with people over a coffee and be part of their day is something I genuinely enjoy.”
One of the aspects Ying values most about her volunteering is the flexibility it offers. “I can work around my own schedule, which makes it really easy to commit. It’s nice to give back in a way that works for me too.”
For Ying, volunteering at Thames Hospice is more than just a way to fill time — it’s been a chance to connect, contribute, and be part of a supportive, passionate community.
