Tom's story
“I was nervous at first but it’s like a family unit here. Everyone is so friendly, I soon relaxed into the role.”

For Tom, volunteering at the Reading Superstore was more than just a way to pass the time—it was a step toward rebuilding confidence and reconnecting with the working world. Volunteering twice a week, Tom has already begun to feel the positive impact on his self-esteem.
“I was nervous at first,” he admits. “But it’s like a family unit here. Everyone is so friendly, I soon relaxed into the role.”
Tom describes himself as a bit of a "computer nerd" and thrives on the behind-the-scenes tasks, like tagging and scanning the many books donated to the store. His natural sense of organisation and willingness to jump into any task and lending a hand wherever it’s needed—has made him an invaluable part of the team.
Tom also lives with dyslexia and dyspraxia, but rather than viewing them as obstacles, he sees volunteering as a chance to embrace his strengths. “You can choose what you want to do,” he says. “I know my strengths, and I like being able to take advantage of them.”
With just a few weeks under his belt, Tom’s confidence is already returning, thanks to the supportive environment and meaningful work. For him, the Reading Superstore isn’t just a shop—it’s a pathway back to work.
