Shirley’s story
“I enjoy working here, meeting customers, sorting through donations—and I just love everyone here.”
“I enjoy working here, meeting customers, sorting through donations—and I just love everyone here.”
When Shirley first walked through the doors of the Reading Superstore, she wasn’t just looking for something to do—she was searching for a connection to someone she deeply missed. Six years after the passing of her mum, who had spent years volunteering in a charity shop, Shirley wanted to do something that would make her feel close to her.
That longing for connection led her to the Superstore. What started as a small step in memory of her mum quickly blossomed into something much bigger. “Volunteering makes me feel I’m doing a good thing,” Shirley adds: “I enjoy working here, meeting customers, sorting through donations—and I just love everyone here.”
The change in volunteering has been just as clear. Friends and family now tell her, “You’re back to the normal, bubbly Shirley.”
The Reading Superstore has given Shirley more than just a role—it’s given her a sense of belonging. In giving back to the community, Shirley has found her way forward—and in doing so, has found comfort in remembering her mum in such a unique way.
