Sharon's story

One Friday morning, countless moments of care
For the past three years, Sharon has dedicated every Friday morning to volunteering as part of the Inpatient Services team. Through compassion, conversation, and countless small acts of kindness, she has become an important source of comfort and support for patients, families, and staff alike.
Sharon describes her role as being “the eyes and ears for the family,” helping with anything non-clinical and supporting the nursing team wherever she can. Her mornings are spent getting to know patients, listening to their stories, and helping to ensure they feel cared for in every possible way.
“Sometimes it’s the little things that can make the difference,” Sharon explains. “Every patient has unique requests, and I try my best to help however I can. From suggesting different food choices to painting nails, if I can help in any way, I will.”
For Sharon, volunteering is as much about companionship as it is practical support. Some patients arrive without family or loved ones around them and simply being present can mean everything.
“Sometimes I feel I make a difference just through chatting or simply sitting with someone,” she says. “I’ve met so many different people, each with their own unique stories. It’s a real privilege for me to hear them.”
Sharon first began volunteering because she wanted to do something rewarding and to help care for others. Having always loved meeting people, she quickly discovered that the Hospice offered far more than she had expected.
“I was surprised by the number of different services the Hospice offers and how special the environment is,” she says. “I tell everyone it’s here because the care you receive is something quite special.”
What stands out most to Sharon is the way the Hospice cares not only for patients, but also for their families and loved ones during incredibly difficult times. She has seen first hand the compassion shown by staff across every part of the organisation, including the continued support offered through pastoral care and counselling services after a loved one has died.
“The Hospice aims to ensure that your end of life is made just as important as the rest of your life,” Sharon says. “They are able to give people that care and dignity.
“Volunteering gives me a real sense of reward,” she reflects. “It’s a privilege and an honour to be part of Thames Hospice, and I’ve learned so much from the people I’ve volunteered with. When I go home, I always feel so grateful for what I have.”
