Sahira's Story

Meet Sahira: A passion for purpose at our Maidenhead Homestore

Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019

Almost a year ago, Sahira joined the Maidenhead Homestore team - and it’s safe to say she hasn’t looked back since. Having spent 15 years in retail, she was ready for a new challenge and wanted something closer to home. By chance, she came across the job advert for and instantly felt a connection: “I knew I could do most of what the role was asking for,” she said.

Almost immediately after applying, she was interviewed and was offered the role the following day. Starting out at Reform Road before moving to Boyn Valley Road, she’s become an essential part of the team, bringing her energy and enthusiasm with her.

The Maidenhead Homestore is one of the Hospice’s flagship stores, and plays a key role in supporting our local community and raising funds to keep the Hospice running.

It has a wide range of preloved and upcycled furniture and homeware together with a significant amount of parking. The store also has a library, children’s zone with preloved books, games and toys and a small café bar with tea, coffee and cake. Tucked inside the store, is the Homestudio, a popular workshop for customers looking to have their old furniture and home decor transformed.

As part of an amazing, hard-working team, Sahira’s role is hands-on and incredibly varied - from dismantling and assembling furniture to jumping on the tills, sorting donations, pricing items, and advising on what will (and won’t) sell. Sahira adds, “I really enjoy everything about it - I look forward to coming in each morning. It’s something different every day.”

Before joining, she hadn’t heard of Thames Hospice but now feels a strong personal connection to the cause. Having lost close family members, including her mother, she understands the importance of compassionate, end-of-life care. “It really resonates with me. I never feel disconnected from the Hospice - we’re helping people in really dark times.”

What truly makes her experience special, though, is the people: “My colleagues are all lovely - from the drivers to the volunteers. We all work together so well. I love that I come in, know what needs to be done, and just get going.”

Even after a long, physical day, she’s ready to do it all again the next morning - because, as she puts it, “I just feel like I’m doing my bit for the community.”

Make a difference

Our services are free of charge to all those in our community who need vital hospice care but this is only made possible through the charitable support and generosity of our amazing community. We need to raise £39,000 each day to fund our services 365 days a year to the people who need us most.

We’ve never needed you, our wonderful supporters, more than we need you today. Please donate what you can to help keep hospice care available for those in desperate need.
