Nicky – welcoming donations at the Reading Superstore

Nicky has been part of Thames Hospice for almost five years. After previously working at the Maidenhead Homestore, she was invited to take on a new challenge: managing the Distribution Centre at the Reading Superstore when it opened in October 2024.
Now at the heart of the Superstore’s donation operation, Nicky and her team manage a constant stream of items arriving each day. From clothes and accessories to homeware, pictures, lamps, vases, crockery, linen and furniture, the team carefully accepts, sorts and processes every donation that comes through the doors.
“We’re always happy to talk to donors about the items we love and that sell really well in the store,” Nicky explains. “And we also take time to explain the importance of Gift Aid, which is such a valuable source of additional income for the Hospice.”
One of Nicky’s favourite parts of the role is meeting donors and hearing the stories behind their contributions. “I love talking to our customers,” she says. “So many people want to share why they’re donating, whether it’s clearing a loved one’s home, downsizing, or passing on something that meant a lot to them. Those conversations really stay with you.”
Not every donation can be sold. Each day brings items that simply aren’t suitable for resale, such as old pots and pans, chipped or single pieces of crockery, worn-out clothing or incomplete games and jigsaws.
“There are things we just can’t sell,” Nicky says. “Single shoes, electrical items that don’t work, or clothes that have really seen better days. Sadly, disposing of these costs the Hospice around £100,000 every year.”
Despite these challenges, Nicky is continually amazed by the generosity and quality of many donations. “I’m blown away by what we receive,” she says. “Beautiful contemporary artwork, fine bone china dining sets, gold jewellery, stunning vintage clothing and even fabulous bridal dresses. Often there’s a lovely story behind them, which makes them even more special.”
One of the issues Nicky has to deal with is items being left outside the Superstore after hours. “When donations are left at the back door, we can’t use them,” Nicky explains. “They’re classed as fly-tipping and have to go straight in the bin, which is really disappointing.”
Even so, Nicky’s enthusiasm for her role shines through. “I genuinely love my work,” she says. “The staff and volunteers keep my day going with fantastic teamwork and great chats. The Distribution Centre has a real buzz, with a constant flow of generous donors who wish us well.”
And for Nicky, there’s always an element of excitement. “Sorting through donations is a real challenge,” she adds with a smile, “because I know I’ll always uncover an amazing gem.”
