Kevin, one of our volunteers at the Woodley shop, talks about why he volunteers for Thames Hospice.
Kevin has been volunteering for Thames Hospice for five years, starting off in a much smaller shop on the opposite side of the High Street. Even though there are so many charity shops in Woodley to choose from, it was an easy decision for Kevin to volunteer for the Hospice as he was looking to support a local, rather than a national, charity. Kevin adds: “I feel local charities need more support as they tend to get overlooked. Woodley is a lovely community and the shop certainly fits in with the neighbourhood, as well as being a local charity.”
Kevin took early retirement ten years ago, and has done some form of volunteering all his life so it was a natural progression to continue volunteering into his retirement.
He worked in the engineering department for BA. Kevin adds: “I used to manage the plans for aircraft coming into the hangars for repairs. I used to work closely with people on the shop floor so good communication skills were essential to ensure everything ran smoothly.
“I missed the banter and camaraderie of colleagues being at home all week and knew volunteering was going to be a great outlet for me.
“I like meeting and serving people who come into our very busy and popular shop, and you can have a chat with almost everyone which makes for a very enjoyable place to work. We are a very happy team and all have a good laugh together.
“We also receive a wealth of donations because supporters know the items are being used for a local cause. We feel this is partly down to the fact we are a helpful, warm and friendly shop.”
In the store, Kevin is an all-rounder and does everything from greeting and chatting to customers, to sorting and putting out stock. After five years, Kevin is still enjoying volunteering. He now has a keen eye on what will sell and, particularly enjoys researching all the different bits of china that are donated, ensuring the Hospice is getting the best price for them.
Kevin adds: “Volunteering brightens up my day and after a morning in the shop, I go home and feel good within myself. It certainly makes me feel a whole load better.”
