Irene’s volunteering journey: giving back and making a difference at Thames Hospice

“Donated furniture and other items are so important to the stores,” said Irene.

After a 30-year career with the Metropolitan Police, working in Heathrow Crime Management, Irene retired in 2019 ready to explore a new chapter in her life. It was then that she decided to try volunteering at Thames Hospice, a decision that has brought her new friendships, experiences and another sense of purpose.

Irene began her volunteering journey at the Thames Hospice Homestore, before it moved to Boyn Valley Road. She soon became a valued member of the bookings line team, volunteering every Monday and Saturday for seven years.

As part of the team, Irene helped manage the donations process from start to finish. She processed incoming forms and emails about furniture donations, spoke with customers about the items they wanted to donate, and organised collections to help bring much-needed stock into the Hospice’s stores.

A key part of Irene’s role was supporting the Gift Aid process, ensuring customers who were UK taxpayers had the opportunity to Gift Aid their donations.

“Donated furniture and other items are so important to the stores,” said Irene. “If customers are UK taxpayers and choose to Gift Aid their donations, the Hospice can claim an extra 25% on the sale of those items, including larger donations like furniture. It doesn’t cost the customer anything extra, but it makes such a difference to the Hospice.”

During her time volunteering, Irene developed a range of new skills and enjoyed being part of a team that made a tangible difference.

After seven years on the bookings line, Irene felt ready for a new challenge and moved into a different volunteering role with the fundraising team. She now helps thank supporters for their generosity by making calls to people who have donated.

For Irene, volunteering is about more than the tasks she completes, it is about people and connection.

“I like to think I contribute and give something back,” she said. “I love chatting and meeting people. There’s nothing I don’t do that I don’t want to. I just enjoy every time I come in to volunteer.”

For anyone considering volunteering, Irene’s message is simple: “Do it. It’s absolutely wonderful, an amazing place and you meet such lovely people.”

Whether supporting furniture donations or thanking generous supporters, Irene continues to play an important part in helping Thames Hospice make a difference.
