Irene’s story
"The camaraderie with the team is important, too. It’s not just about giving up a bit of free time—it’s about working together and making a difference."
"The camaraderie with the team is important, too. It’s not just about giving up a bit of free time—it’s about working together and making a difference."
For the past six years, Irene has been a volunteer at the Maidenhead Homestore, working on the furniture booking line and helping to organise the collection of donated furniture. Her role is crucial in making sure donated items are collected and given a second life.
Irene initially decided to volunteer because she wanted to do something meaningful with her time. "I wanted to use my brain and feel like I was doing something worthwhile," she says. When she found out about Thames Hospice, it seemed like a perfect fit. She’s passionate about the cause and appreciates the opportunity to contribute in a way that supports people in need.
One of the aspects Irene enjoys most about her volunteer work is the interaction with customers. “I love the sociability of volunteering,” she explains. “It’s great to chat with customers and hear their stories.” The work is not just about helping with logistics but also about connecting with the community.
For Irene, volunteering is about more than just putting in time. "It means a lot to me to feel like I’m achieving something," she says. "The camaraderie with the team is important, too. It’s not just about giving up a bit of free time—it’s about working together and making a difference."
Through her role at Thames Hospice, Irene has found a way to contribute to a cause she believes in while enjoying the connections and sense of purpose that come with it.
