Finding peace in giving: Allison's story of support.

"We felt so blessed that he was able to be at the Hospice because it was peaceful and calm, and we had time," Allison remembers. "We didn't feel rushed or anything, and it was such compassionate and kind care, I think he was happy and content."

For Allison, playing the Thames Hospice lottery is more than just a chance to win; it's a way to give back and honour the memory of her husband's father, Pete, whose final days were filled with peace and comfort at the hospice.

Allison's connection to Thames Hospice is deeply personal. In 2022, her husband's father, Pete, required end-of-life care. Pete, who had lived a quiet but fulfilling life, had been battling several chronic conditions, including kidney failure and the effects of old age. Despite his frailty, he remained a loving grandfather and great-grandfather, cherishing moments with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

"He loved when he'd get hold of their little hands," Allison recalled, "and he was always overwhelmed with it. He loved to sit and have a cuddle with them."

When Pete's health deteriorated, and he required hospice care, the family was faced with a difficult time. Allison, who had experience with hospice care through her own father's passing, knew the importance of a supportive environment. Her husband, however, was less familiar with the concept.

"I think he was really surprised at how light and airy it was," Allison said, describing their initial experience at Thames Hospice. "I think sometimes people anticipate an air of doom and gloom, don't they? But actually, it's just not like that at all. It's, if anything, it's kind of hopeful."

At Thames Hospice, Pete was able to spend his final weeks in a peaceful and comfortable setting, surrounded by his loved ones. The staff provided not only expert medical care but also emotional support to the entire family. They allowed them the time and space to say their goodbyes, a precious gift during a difficult time.

"We felt so blessed that he was able to be at the Hospice because it was peaceful and calm, and we had time," Allison remembers. "We didn't feel rushed or anything, and it was such compassionate and kind care, I think he was happy and content."

This experience left a lasting impression on Allison, affirming her desire to give back to the team that had provided such invaluable support to her family and Allison signed up the Thames Hospice lottery!

In January 2024 Allison's dedication was rewarded with a £1,000 lottery win. While she plans to use some of the winnings for a holiday and a trip, her primary focus remains on the impact her support has on the hospice. "You can know that your money is supporting local people during their most challenging time – the care is just exceptional." Allison states.

Allison finds comfort in knowing her contributions help create "havens of care" for those in their most vulnerable moments. It’s a way to ensure that others can experience the same level of compassion and support that meant so much to her family.

Thames Hospice relies on the generosity of supporters like Allison to continue providing vital care. By playing the lottery, individuals can make a tangible difference in the lives of patients and their families.

"Do it because you might win, and that's brilliant. But you can know that your money is going to support local people with exception end-of-life." Allison encouraged. "Even if I never win anything again, it's worth every penny."

This month (February 2025) was the first year we reached more than a £1 million income revenue – significantly contributing our care in our community.

"We can’t thank our lottery players enough! Our lottery is a brilliant way to support us, providing a steady source of income that helps us plan for the future, and care for everyone who needs us.” Jim Curry, Campaigns Manager
