Debbie's story
“After being at home for so long, I needed that connection. Volunteering has given me confidence — and a chance to be part of something bigger than myself.”
“After being at home for so long, I needed that connection. Volunteering has given me confidence — and a chance to be part of something bigger than myself.”
After years as a stay-at-home mum, Debbie found herself at a turning point. With her children growing up and gaining independence, she decided it was time to do something for herself. That decision led her to the local hospice charity shop, Reading Superstore — and, as she puts it, it changed everything.
“Within the first week of volunteering, I felt happier,” she says. “I really fitted in straight away. Everyone was so friendly and approachable — I never felt nervous about asking questions.”
Volunteering quickly became more than just a way to fill her time. After the sudden loss of her mum, Debbie found that giving her time to the Hospice was a meaningful way to cope with her grief.
“Losing Mum so suddenly was incredibly hard,” she shares. “Being part of the team has really helped me — it’s brought me comfort, knowing I’m giving something back.”
Her role involves working on the store’s room sets — displays designed to showcase furniture and homeware items. As items are sold, she refreshes the space, ensuring it remains just as inviting for the next customer. It’s a job that’s tapped into a side of herself she hadn’t explored before.
“Everyone in my family is creative, and now I feel like I’m catching up with them again,” she says, smiling. “It’s hard work, and I do go home tired, but it’s so enjoyable.”
Debbie also highlights how much the social aspect of volunteering has meant to her.
“Spending time with other adults again has been really important for me,” she says. “After being at home for so long, I needed that connection. Volunteering has given me confidence — and a chance to be part of something bigger than myself.”
For Debbie, stepping into a volunteer role was more than just a change in routine — it was a step toward rediscovering who she is. “It’s one of the best decisions I’ve made,” she says. “It was time to do something for me.”
