Caleb and Hok Ping’s Story

Caleb and Hok Ping, two of our volunteers at the Woodley store, talk about why they volunteer for Thames Hospice.

Thames Hospice’s Woodley store has helped couple, Caleb and Hok Ping, fulfil a long-held ambition and brought a new sense of purpose to their lives.

After retiring, Caleb and Hok Ping moved to Woodley with a desire to explore different parts of Britain. Their son, now married, was living his own life, leaving the couple to search for something to do with their newfound time.

Hok Ping, who had previously volunteered her time to support a toddlers’ group, encouraged Caleb to consider giving back as well. Unsure about how he wanted to spend his time, Caleb wandered around the town centre, and it was there he realised that volunteering in a charity shop could be the perfect fit. After considering a few options, he decided to approach Thames Hospice, drawn by the friendly atmosphere and the popularity of the store.

Caleb explains: “I was looking to volunteer for either half or one day a week. Since I wasn’t sure whether or not I was going to enjoy it, I signed up for a taster session.”

The experience quickly became more than just a way to pass the time. Caleb took on a variety of roles—from meeting and greeting customers to sorting through donations and stocking the shop. His favourite part? Tagging! Caleb adds: “Sorting through a bag of donations, getting them ready for the shop floor—there’s something really satisfying about it.”

Soon, Caleb’s enthusiasm was contagious, and he persuaded Hok Ping to join him. Together, they began fulfilling a dream they had held for years: working side by side in a meaningful, volunteer-driven environment.

Two years later, the couple continue to thrive in their roles at the Woodley store. Hok Ping, reflecting on their journey, says: “Previously, we were always so busy, working eight hours a day. But we always had this dream of doing something that wasn’t about money, to make our lives more meaningful and memorable. Now, instead of money, we are putting memories into our money box.”

Their time at Thames Hospice has not only allowed them to give back to their community, but it has also strengthened their bond as a couple, enriching their retirement years. Hok Ping couldn’t be happier with the decision to volunteer, and for Caleb, the sense of fulfilment is clear.

By turning their dream into reality, Caleb and Hok Ping have shown that it’s never too late to make a difference—and in doing so, they’ve found a deeper sense of purpose and joy in their retirement.
